Narrative
The Duttons face a new set of challenges in the early 20th century, including the rise of Western expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression.. While America’s Great Depression began in 1929, it got an early start in Montana. The Great Depression began in Montana in 1918, almost 10 years before the rest of the nation. Between drought and the reduced demand for agricultural products, due to the end of the "Great War" (aka First World War, from 1914 to 1918), many farmers suffered greatly.
In addition, 200 banks in Montana failed
As a result, Montana farmers would default on wartime loans which lead to widespread bank failure throughout the state. Between 1921-1925, half of the farmers in Montana lost their land. By 1925, 70,000 of the 82,000 homesteaders in Montana left. Not only were crops affected by the drought, it was followed by locusts infestation and cattle succumbing to contagion..

Almost everything about this shows predecessor was perfect. Hard to follow on the heels of that. This does an okay job, but it’s clearly plotted for something much, much longer. And the stakes are entirely different.
There’s still great performances, thankfully
In 8 long episodes, probably 4 episodes of things happen. It has some pretty great moments, but it is spinning its wheels in favor of a very slow burn, which is unfortunate. Setting the bar so high and trying to clear it an entirely different way is not the best foot forward,It’s far from bad though. It’s the contrast that hurts it.
The new characters seem well situated
The sometimes? Return of the narrator of 1883 is very welcome too. It just feels a bit toothless, to me.
